Costa Tropical

Although not nearly so well known as the neighbouring Costa del Sol, the Costa Tropical is one of the hidden gems of Andalusia. It runs from the popular resort town of Nerja in the west through La Herradura and the charming towns of Almuñecar and Salobreña. This stretch of coastline takes its name from the sub-tropical climate, which allows the cultivation of exotic fruits and crops such as avocadoes, mangoes, bananas and sugar cane.

Due to this micro climate the Costa Tropical has the healthiest climate in Europe and second in the world as stated by the World Health Organisation. The all year round micro-climate provides protection from extreme temperatures of the summer and the cold temperatures which can occur in the winter. The lush green valleys and fruit plantations in La Herradura, Almunecar and Salobrena thrive due to great all year round temperatures and mountain spring water coming from the Sierra Nevada.

Just one hour away from the two international airports of Granada and Malaga. New motorways will be completed within a few years reducing this time to about 45 minutes and linking the coast to the big cities of Granada and Malaga. The extensive ski range of the Sierra Nevada which hosted the 1996 World Alpine Ski Championships is 75 minutes from the beaches, boasting 84 km of pistes, more snow cannons than any other resort guaranteeing skiing from December to April.

An abundance of activities are available such as, scuba diving, snorkelling, hand-gliding, kiting, horse riding, hiking, biking, water sports, fishing. The Marina Del Este in La Herradura has moorings for 227 boats and yachts with plenty of bars and restaurants to sit and enjoy the environment with terrific views out towards Cotobro, Almuñecar, Salobreña and Motril. In Motril there is a bigger harbour providing landings for cruise ship passengers and now future container ships coming in from the Suez Canal which will supply Madrid. This will be done either by road transport on the new motorways or via the new rail network which again will bring passengers down as well as goods up, all this contributing to up lift in the area in commerce and capital growth.

There is the beautiful countryside of the Alpujarras, Cerro Gordo, Sierra Nevada and Lecrin Valley. There are amazing historical monuments and sites of the Phoenicians, the Romans and the Arabs such as the Alhambra, aqua ducts, castles, burial tombs and bridges etc. Thousands of acres of protected nature reserves preserving some of the most beautiful landscape and coastline in Spain thus creating an abundance of flora and fauna for us to enjoy; one of the most popular being Peña Escrita in Almunecar with its abundance of wild flowers and animals, where you can even rent a log cabin to soak up the atmosphere, or dine at the restaurant at the top of the reserve and savour the views.
